Title I Paraeducators
The federal No Child Left Behind
legislation mandates that paraeducators working as Title 1 instructional
paraeducators in Title 1 targeted assistance programs and all paraeducators
in Title 1 schoolwide programs be highly qualified. According to this law,

• academic skills in reading,
writing, and mathematics at the 2nd year college level, and
• skills needed to (assisting
in) instructing students.
Paraeducators hired after January
1, 2001 must meet these criteria as a condition of employment.
Paraeducators employed prior to January
1, 2001 have until January 2005 to demonstrate these competencies.
