Learning Services - Steps to Becoming Highly QualifiedSTEP 1: Review the new
requirements for Title I and Special Education paraeducator qualifications.
Under the ESEA (Leave No Child
Behind) law, paraprofessionals whose positions are supported with Title
I funds will need to obtain one of the three qualifications
below. Under the current drafts of the new reauthorization of the
IDEA law, paraprofessionals whose positions are supported by Special Education
funds will need to select one option to demonstrate
academic skills in reading, writing, and mathematics at the 2nd year college
level.
STEP 2: Based on
academic background and interests, determine the paraeducator's path in
achieving the designation of “Highly Qualified.”
Currently employed paraeducators
and candidates for paraeducator positions have varying levels of academic
skill and assisting-in-instructing skills. They also have different long-term
goals. The following flow chart is designed to guide an individual in making
decisions about options in complying with the law and moving toward professional
goals.
STEP 3: Document
progress toward a “Highly Qualified” designation according to the district's
format.
Generally, each paraeducator will
select one option and create a plan to demonstrate
academic skills in reading, writing, and mathematics at the 2 nd year college
level and skills needed to assist in instructing students. The district
may ask paraeducators to document completed college or university course
work. Generally, the principal or supervisor approves and monitors the progress
toward the implementation of the plan.
STEP 4: Determine
the district and/or regional resources to becoming “Highly Qualified” (current
paraeducators before 2006 and newly hired paraeducators upon hire).
STEP 5: Register
for classes or take designated assessment. |
