The Centennial BOCES Preschool Child Find team schedules and advertises developmental screenings in member districts several times a year. The screening is for children aged birth to 6 who have not yet entered kindergarten. We screen the areas of vision and hearing, speech/language, cognition (thinking and problem-solving skills) small and large motor coordination, social development and self-help skills. Parents know their child best so visiting with parents is an important component of the screening process. The process takes approximately 1 hour, however, some children have initial difficulty engaging with the examiners and may require additional time. Most children enjoy the play-based screening activities.
When your child has completed the screening you will know if his skills are within normal limits or if the Child Find team has additional recommendations. The team sometimes recommends that a child be monitored through a re-screening, usually within 6 months to a year. At other times, screening results and/or professional observation indicate that a child may have a delay in one or more developmental area and an evaluation is recommended (see evaluation page).
For more information or to schedule a screening appointmen, please call Brenda McDonald-Buttram at 970-352-7404, ext. 129 in the Greeley area or Lynn Clise 970-867-8297, ext. 119 in the South Platte area.
